During my career I have had the
pleasure of working with many good mentors and many bosses. My mentors taught me to look through the
elusion of fairness and opportunity in certain organizations. My bosses only focused on their benefit and
could care less about the collateral damage that occurred with consistent
frequency.
Understanding
the definition of who you work for is important in a person’s career.
Mentor - experienced
and trusted adviser.
Boss - a person who exercises
control or authority.
Every time my mentor was promoted or earned equity, I was afforded the same outcome. When my bosses got promoted, I received a similar job in a newly named company with a job grade that had plenty of lateral opportunity.
I know how it felt to have my mentor
share the “real wealth” with me and I appreciate them today and lead / mentor
by their example.
From day one at Southeast Mortgage of
Georgia, Inc., SEM, we always had more than one shareholder and today we have
over 50 - all still employed with SEM.
At our next Holiday party, that number will be higher as we recognize
those who help us grow our company.
Equitable distribution to those who create value for all.
In today’s mortgage industry, many of
the best employees in our industry miss the distinction between a boss and a
mentor.
If your company sells or goes public and you just get
an email announcing it, you have a boss.
If you get the same job with a new company name, you have a boss. Your contribution to the value of the company
is lost or paid to your bosses. If your bank continually sells and your bank
name changes without giving you equity or sharing the gain, you have a boss.
If you let it happen over and over, do not be angry at anyone but yourself at the end of your career. Regret haunts good people when they do not take control when there was time.
You have finite time to leverage your career so make a choice that is right for you and not what your "boss" tells you. Mentors know the value you
create should be recognized. Loyalty is
a two way street.
